I experienced my very first migraine this week…I’ve been very busy with wedding planning and work that I’ve been forgetting to take care of myself on the inside and on the outside from time to time…looks like my body and mind decided to remind me.

Feeling off for the past few days reminded me of the suicide prevention training course I took a few years back; the one thing that stuck with me the most was when the instructor told us that we’ll never be able to help someone else if we don’t help ourselves first. She introduced us (me) to the notion of self-caring…something that, surprisingly, I knew nothing about.

Self-care is about doing things that benefit you and only you. Whether it’s taking time off work for a ‘you’ day, investing in a hobby that you love or simply disconnecting from the world and sitting on a balcony and breathing in fresh air…it doesn’t really matter as long as you do something that makes you feel good.

5 Simple Ways to Practice Self-Care:

Plan your week around your self-care activity, not the other way around: you’re your own priority so before you make any other plans, make sure you’ve taken care of yourself first.

Learn to say no and NOT feel bad about it: do what you can…going way above and beyond will only leave you stressed, exhausted and overwhelmed.

Put in as much effort into doing things for yourself as you do in doing things for others: when you’re doing something for someone else, you want to do it perfectly, right? The same should apply when you’re doing something for yourself.

Take care of yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually: body, mind and spirit…watch what you eat, exercise, develop healthy relationships and nurture yourself spiritually.

Say bye to FOMO: ‘Fear Of Missing Out’ (FOMO) is REAL! But, you don’t always have to be everywhere…it’s ok to skip out on some events in order to rest. There will be plenty more!

I’ve been practicing self-care for a solid two years now; it’s a daily, weekly and monthly activity and something I do my best never to forget.

Life is only getting busier, it’s time to take control of it and make it work to your advantage because what good are you to yourself or anyone if you’re burned out all the time? Stop rushing life…we only live once. 🙂
